There was a little discussion of this on reddit after Gencon I think, but I haven't seen any here on the forums yet.

So we know from Gencon interviews that a new ludus is in the works, though a long way off from release yet. Colloquially known as "the Greeks", they seem to be called the Hellenic League, a reference also found in Medusa's flavour text.

What we know about them, as far as I can tell, is that they will have some kind of special luck-manipulation abilities, probably in reference to the famous Oracle of Delphi.

Ancient Greece is certainly a rich source of inspiration in terms of mythology, and we already have the three gorgon sisters as a Greek vanguard.

I'm kinda drawing a blank in terms of what I would expect from their gladiators though. All I can see before me are the oily muscles of the Spartans from 300.

Any ideas?

Rampant speculation time. OK here we go. We'll probably get a Spartan, although I have a suspicion it'll be a fully armored Hoplite rather than a Zack Snyder male stripper. I would think that some form of Amazon would be in order. Maybe a Hercules like figure with a lion skin?

Those would be my guesses, but I can't wait to see what the actuality is.

Might see some gladiators that take on the personae of classic Greek heroes like Perseus, Achilles, Jason and the like... LOTS of cool Titan options too.

They hinted that the mechanics will revolve around luck and fortune and stacking the odds... easiest way to do that would be with manipulating the dice, which is huge on a d6 so I'm very curious to see how that is done.

Only two years to go...

Yeah, there are lots of hero names to draw on from Greek mythology. I already associate a few AR models with Greek heroes though. Micon seems to me like a mix Atlas (throw and all) and Hercules, and Aquila really reminds me of Perseus. For some reason.

The amazon is a great idea. I'm also thinking there must be something to do with philosophy and religion in there. Especially things like the Eleusian Mysteries or other mystery cults.

Titans would be a great theme, even though in the current game, titans the model class are unaligned. The Collossus of Rhodes could be a neat inspiration point. Some kind of statue warrior maybe...

It's easy to run amuck with the mythological beasts when it comes to Greece. But that's already been done, kinda, I feel, with the Gorgon ludus.

So I don't feel much of a need to stuff loads of hydras, chimera, pegasi, etc. into the game. If individual monsters are made, and are beautiful, then cool, but this is a game of gladiator combat, not Clash of the Titans: The Boardgame. So I'm mostly interested in the gladiators, less so the monsters.

I think it's also important to not get too narrowly focused on the theme. If there was no Egyptian ludus, and the idea was suggested, I wouldn't really know what to expect. I think the only "predictable" one is Thoth, who looks like a classic Egyptian priest. But one of my favourites of theirs is Mago, who is armed with a trident and net. He looks like a classic Roman gladiator, despite not being part of the classic Roman ludus. And I think that's awesome. He is a gladiator first, and an Egyptian-themed model second.

I hope that will be the case with the Hellenic League too - that many of their models will be gladiators first and Greeks second. I could imagine guys with somewhat unusual weapons, like Ur-Keks giant crescent axe. Maybe some Greeks with chain weapons, or something. And I could also see their warriors as not necessarily looking that different from what we have. When we first saw Valen and Ywain, I thought that Valen looked like a Zephyri and Ywain like a Ludus Magnus. But they were both Legio. Along that vein, I could see Hellenics as mingling perfectly fine with Ludus Magnus and the other ludi looks-wise - the important thing is that each model has its own unique personality.

The Spartan is a must. Free push if target is within 1" of pit.

A wrestler would be interesting. Special ability on successful attack to exhaust himself and target instead of dealing damage. Target cannot remove fatigue while wrestler is engaged and exhausted.

A satyr gladiator would also be cool.

Excellent ideas. Blood Bowl in its later developments got a skill like the wrestling skill you describe. I never tried it, but the fatigue mechanic in AR makes it really interesting for this game, I think.

The satyr idea is fascinating. Almost all the ludus gladiators in AR are mundane humans, as far as I can tell. The only one I can think of that has something supernatural about him is Gaius Pallidus, with his druidic regenerative magic. Doesn't he also have little horns or something?

A new gladiator with more of a supernatural touch could be very cool potentially.
