I am considering a Hotz mat arena, but the largest they come in is 21 inches in diameter. The pictures on the site have 28mm models and make it look like the arena would be plenty big enough, but it sounds small. What do you guys think is the minimum size needed for Arena Rex? I could see playing matches as large as 6 vs 6 since I pledged the Ludus Ultimus.

Here is a link to the mat.

If I do get one I plan on doing double sided, 1 inch hexes on one side and no hexes on the other. The RRG guys had told me during the campaign that they had tested on a hex system and would likely include some conversion rules for it in the rulebook. I am more of a boardgamer , so I would rather try using hexes to avoid measuring move distances. Having a double sided mat though would let me play either way in the case it doesn't play as well that way though.

If you go to my blog (via signature) and look up my AR posts, one of them goes into arena sizes... It was actually quite interesting doing a scale comparison to the real Coliseum vs RRG's suggestion.

In the end I will be making an oval one, slighly bigger than a 30" diameter circle. I feel it will add a bit more strategy compared to a circular design.

Thanks for the reply Alladin. Reading your blog helped me decide that I really did need something bigger. After scouring the web, I found something that looks good to me. I wanted something that can be portable yet big enough for a decent game. I just bought one of these from the UK Amazon site for ~$55 shipped to Arizona.

I am giving all the figures to my son, and am going to repaint the arena similar to what has been done here.

The arena breaks apart so it should be pretty easy to transport and is lightweight. It measures about 33" across, so it should be a much better size than the 21" mat I was considering. I am still looking at underlays, and will probably just order a plain "Desert Brown Hex Mat" from Hotz instead. This way I can roll out the felt mat, snap the arena together and be ready to go in short order. At least I hope it ends up that way. :D

No problem! I was actually looking at the one you linked to myself, but couldn't find a suitable seller... Considering my grand scheme will take me 10 years and to realize at my current pace, I may pick this up as a suitable interim solution for under 100 bucks.

Thanks for the good find! Lets just hope they have them in stock for when I plan on buying :)

In the rules they recommend either 24" x 24" square or a 30" diameter circle. Personally I've gone for a 24" square.
