So I've decided that the idea of a modular arena that was started (but seemingly never actually done) is right up my alley. I've spent a lot of time lately on game boards, but those projects have all been finished.

I looked at the older threads and tried to pull the best parts together.
So here is what I've done.

1-Changed from the idea of an oval arena to round. I did a bunch of asking around and got 14 votes from other players- ALL FOR ROUND.

2-Adjusted the idea of a hypogeum. Romans had a huge network of tunnels, elevators and ramps as you all well know. Rather than try and go crazy, I decided to just go with a set of holes in the board and I'll make drop-in terrain pieces. Cages and Ramps for Leo and other animals and pits filled with spikes, gators and fire.

3-Arena floor is 32" round with 8 Pillars (small squares around edge) out from the edge far enough to let Largest base models to pass.

4-Square pits will fit fire/spikes and Double Square pits will fit animal cages and ramps.

All of the pits will have covers that fit to make the arena floor flat and to cover the spots not being used.

Finally a small area (bottom of picture) will be for the Pharoah to watch from.

C&C welcomed greatly. Thanks all.

Well that just looks beautiful so far. I will keep an eye on this, and ponder if I can do something similar myself some day. :)

Well the next step has been completed. All the pits have been cut out and the beginning of the Pharoah's viewing box has been roughed out. Decided to make the box hang out over the arena (though JUST BARELY to make the area underneath still playable).

Next step will be to plaster cloth all the pits and the ring wall to get a smooth look and feel.

So, with the generosity of my LGS, for space to work without worrying about my rugs, I'm happy to share that I have finished the next step. All of the 'floor' and the ringwall are covered in plaster. I decided to go with plaster in order to keep the weight down (as opposed to MDF or plywood). It was messy as hell, but it came out FANTASTIC.

Now it will go into the closet with the dehumidifier to get an express-dry. Working on traps and cages as well as other obstacles, but that's for another day.

Thanks for watching and feel free to ask Q's or make comments.

That looks great! Smooth and effective. Looking forward to seeing what you have planned to put in the holes.

This evening I was able to finish up all the pit/hypogeum covers. Including the split-able double sized pits. Everything fits nice and are easy to remove and put in. Used small dimension balsa to make squares that slide down into the holes so it all stays put where it's supposed to.
You can see in the third pic, that there are a few pieces that will stay attached to the floor of the arena to act as spacers and keep the covers from moving around during gameplay.
Enjoy, and as always, C&C welcome.
