So after playing the play-test a few times and very much liking the game I decided to make a board. I wanted to do a 30" diameter board but cutting a circle wasn't going to happen and I already had some 24" square pieces of 25mm thick blue foam board, so here is what I came up with:

This is 2 25mm blue foam stuck together using some scenic pva, It dries really strong. I cut 2 holes to be used as pits from the top one.

Then I got some Tamyia Light Sand effect texture paint, 3 pots of it which was quite expensive at £10 a pot but it made for quite a nice sand arena effect.

Then I made some boards out of balsa wood to go over the pits so you could cover or uncover them when you like.

I've just ordered 3 Doric columns which should come next week. I will probably try to make a spikey colum out of one of them by attaching velcro at the top and bottom of the column and making a strip or 2 of spikes to wrap around the column, so you can use them as standard columns or arena hazards.

Finally got some Black tape to go round the edges of the board and got the columns. Toying with the idea of a spiked column but not sure how to do it at the moment. Heres some pics of the finished board with and without some Paper dolls :)

For a spiked column you could glue together some of the coffee stirrers to form a square or hexagon sleeve and slip it over the actual column, then glue the spikes to that.

Or in a similar way make a teepee/tall pyramid of stirrers and have spikes coming from that and then you can move it around the board if you like.

How did you get such clean, sharp edges on your pit cut-outs? Every time I try to cut foam like that it sort of rips and tears and I need to try and sandpaper it smooth (which never quite ends up straight). What's the secret?

Hmmm, a sleeve sounds a good idea thx Arden.

@Gomez, A sharp knife, literally one that hasn't been used yet, small cuts and patients.
