It's a bit premature to start a paint log when I don't have any miniatures yet, but what the hey.

Without models, the only thing to do is to build something. So the first part of my arena modelling efforts will be about making some hazards for the arena floor.

I'm starting simple, with some fences and some columns. Wounding hazards have an obvious brutal appeal, so I started with them. Below are my first shots of a spiked column and a spiked fence, made with simple modelling materials like foam, wooden sticks and toothpicks. The lighting is poor, but you probably get the idea.

I got some paint on the spiky fence now, but I think the brown of the wood is too dark. Should be lighter and more sandy. I'll go back and work on that.

Thank you! I went back and tried to lighten up the wood a bit, but I'm not sure this picture reflects it. I should get some kind of light box or something. I also added some blood splatter on the cruel spikes, to show how wounding a hazard it is. Sharp and rusty, very unpleasant.

I've also been painting more on the column, though it's not done yet.

I think my plan will be to have two columns, one wounding and one normal, and three fences, one wounding and two normal. That seems like it should be enough to fill up an arena plenty.

The idea with the base sand is to have it in the same white-grey colour as the sand in those arena mats that I saw that zreef's crew played on in those birthday photos. I love those mats, and really need to get one. The sand looks so white that to me it looks like a snow base, but hey, it works sorta. :)

Alright, column one is basically done.

Thank you!

I don't normally do blocky black edges for my terrain, but for this game it seems to make sense. Since the main purpose of the terrain is not to block LOS, as it is in most other games, but rather to be something to push models into, it seems like it should be clearly defined where exactly the terrain piece begins and ends. Hence the black outlines. If a model's black base touches the hazard's black base, collision occurs.

Some more progress on the terrain, still works in progress. First, new and non-wounding fences.

Here, a non-wounding column joins the wounding one. The second one is clearly older and more worn down.

Finally, I'm also working on the first of two 5" duelling rings. You have to have these for the duel scenarios, right? Here it is with the two fences and a scale model that I'm thinking of using as a stand-in for Euryale. I'm not fond of the Euryale model and am considering trying to sculpt my own one, but that will probably take some time, so this model (which I love dearly) can work for now.

The duell ring looks really nice, though I can't understand why you don't like Euryale ;).

What I would also be a bit concerned of is, that maybe it is a bit too small if there are more movement based gladiators on it or two titans. Maybe making the second one a bit bigger?
