UPDATE:

Acerbus is moving along...

Really tried to model his hide after real rhinos - the flesh-tone of his upper lip, the darker saddle on his back, the brown tones... All things I never would have included if I didn't do a bit of research. Pretty happy with things thus far, but still need to work on his tail, toenails, horns, eyes, and wounds.

As always, any questions, comments, critique, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Lovely, lovely stuff, friend. The research will often reveal things that aren't that hard to include, but go miles and miles for the overall look of a model. Well done!

Yeah, not hard at all to add those elements but it makes a big difference. The research was a little tough, because it seemed like every good photo reference I found made the animals' colorations all look completely different - almost like each was its own species of rhino. Very different from lions, who all look more or less identical in that respect. Eventually I started to see some patterns I liked and wanted to use, but it was sort of challenging at first.

Thanks for the response!

Yeah, it can be tough. My other issue is I hate it when I'm looking for some photo reference on something, and I end up with a bunch of horrible photos of poached whatever I'm looking for.
This makes me excited to paint all the beasts I have on my list!

There are actually lots of coloration variations in lions :)

Rhino looks great! I will be borrowing some of your techniques for mine! Just like I did with Leo :)

Someone on another forum asked for an explanation of the process I used - I actually documented most of the steps with pictures so I put together a short explanation here if anyone is interested...

I love the push and pull of the highlights/shadows. Goves so much depth and interest, as long as one avoids getting too thick with any one pass.

It almost looks like it is made of marble, the skin has a kind of translucent stone effect...
