I've been looking around for some minis to tide me over under AR ships. They've got to be

1) in resin, want some practice with the material
2) the right scale for AR
3) the right 'look' for AR, meaning a similar technology level (no platemail, etc), nothing overtly fantasy, wouldn't look out of place against the models when they do come out with some house rules
4) a fair amount of exposed skin for painting practice

Has anyone else been looking into something similar? Can anyone recommend some figures?

i would buy 54mm miniature for practise. the bigger the details, the more you can do. after becoming better you can reduce scale. you can practise oil techniques better on larger models at start.

If anyone else is interested in something like this, one of the decent sources I've found is Mierce Miniatures. A lot of them are far too fantastical, but some of the more human ones look like they could fit.

Like this fellow,

Who happens to be sculpted by Sebastian Archer, one of the great sculptors working on AR!

I love Mierce miniatures.

I just hate trying to figure out how to pronounce the names of the models. :P

I'd heartily recommend this Greek woman from Hasslefree Miniatures. At 40mm she's close enough to the Arena Rex 35mm scale to stand out as a slightly tall female although she does have some naked bits (so the link should not be considered safe for work).

That, and the fact that the guy sold his own company to himself twice to avoid paying debts to his suppliers. Yeah.... I don't buy their miniatures any more.

Avatars Of War is worth a look at.

I have a Minotaur Lord that will be getting a set of custom stats to be played in the arena.

There's a few other monsters that might make their way too.

Heh, what a flagrant GW ripoff. They have some nice casts though.

What exactly is a rip off?

In this context, it means they took the ideas and imagery from GW.

Yes and no.

Just because GW IP's everything doesn't necessarily give them the rights to anything some one else made.

Ok so some of the figures AoW do strike an uncanny resemblence to some of GW's work (the beastmen for one) but can GW really lay claim to a Minotaur? A knight in armour?

I guess it all depends on your view of GW though, and this isn't the place to go into the whole GW debate (to me it's been played to death anyway and is the source of most forums demise IMHO).
