I still think the previous ruling for Retaliate is useful to help provide some light, but it isn't an exactly analogous situation. The fact that they both have a trigger of "an enemy model attacking this model" involved, in my mind still shows them being somewhat related. However as you pointed out, the "fail to" trigger of both abilities being different makes them apply in different circumstances.

In regards to the B1 situation, its not that I disagree with you per se, because depending on how "treat as" is ruled, I agree your outcome is entirely possible. I simply take a more literal approach to reading the rules (i.e. a counter attack isn't an attack because the rules don't say it is), as opposed to a more intuitive one. And absent any official input regarding the "treat as" question it's really a toss up, in my opinion.

To the question of Inevitable/Sanction, that really is the heart of the issue, and I can easily see it being ruled either way. However, if I had to give an opinion based on the information we have right now, I would say they both take effect.

Stheno attacks Tribune > results of the attack are no successes > Sanction kicks in and Tribune's controller gains a Favor > Inevitable kicks in as the attack was unsuccessful, and Stheno then resolves a PUSH against Tribune.

My reasoning is that "treat the attack as if", is different than "make the result of the attack". (See my Caveat Emptor example from earlier in this thread)

Cool. :) I feel like this discussion was worth it. Thanks for participating.

Maybe I should start a new thread to make it super clear that this is currently an issue we disagree about and would like an answer to if possible. I think I will.

Yes, it's a very interesting question that easily affects many different possible interactions.

I do think a separate topic would be a good for the Ywain Rebuff question specifically. I rambled enough for this thread.

For the record, I privately emailed Walker and he answered as follows.

Q: If Stheno attacks Tribune, will Inevitable make it impossible for Sanction to ever trigger?
A: Yep

Awesome. Glad to hear a decisive answer to the "treat as" question.
