As a new player- I'm sort of curious if Gaius is basically an auto-include in most lists (baring perhaps beasts and gorgons)? He's a bit slow but seems to have decent defense, offense and his heal ability is very nice. Not to mention Undying. It just seems like he's always going to be better than something else I might include in any given cohort.

I don't think he's always an auto-include but he did work toward my initial game strategy. He doesn't generate any favor, and his heals require a close proximity within 3". In games that I play against him, he becomes an early target. I don't want him getting to Last man Standing, in fear of the heals, the undying, and he can hit hard. Meaning he can easily take out a model each LMS clear turn. When I target him early, I don't find him to be much of a threat.

Thanks for the insight. In my two games against him I've gone at him hard right away and been fortunate enough to have Micon toss him into a pit both games (but once again, we're new so a more skilled opponent could likely protect against this better).

My impression is that the game is played to such a non-competitive level everywhere in the world that such a thing as "auto-include" doesn't exist yet, other than as a question of personal preference. People on here have mentioned that they really like Viatrix, for example, and see her as one of the best gladiators in the game. But I haven't seen anyone argue that she is such a superior choice that you handicap yourself if you don't take her.

She's very very good but redundant in Legio. Taunt isn't useless by any means, but she doesn't really hit all that hard and forcing the opponent to attack her isn't really sheltering a frailer model. Several times I've run her with Valen as the ultimate example of redundancy.

Gaius is super good but his speed is a real issue. It can definitely be exploited.

I thought the tournament was brilliant despite being crushed like a grape in most games.

I managed to win a seriously cool spot prize in the form of an actual Roman coin.
