For those of you who're getting interested now that it's hit a general release, a review.

Nice write up - it's nice to see others' thoughts on the game.

Incidentally, I came to the same conclusion you do regarding the bump to everyone's ATK stat - power attacks and counterattacks seem like they'll be waaaaaaay more useful than anything defensive (though like you I haven't gotten in nearly enough games to verify anything like conclusively).

Thanks for the thoughts-- I'm thinking that the limiting factor is the counterattacker being fatigued or an assist having a strong effect, but yeah, otherwise it seems really strong, especially if you're playing a faction that generates a lot of favor, since they can easily push those stats above yours.

Fatigue really, really tempers my urge to always counterattack. Counterattacks are certainly more powerful than defense rolls, but they have the twofold effect of removing the defender from the list of models you can activate on your next turn, and, making the model fatigued prior to when damage is resolved - though I have a better chance of not being hit, any hit that does happen still occurs on a fatigued model rather than a fresh model.

for example, If I've got Lupa in a good position and my opponent doesn't have two favor, I'm not going to want to counterattack with her, I'm going to want to defend, hope for good rolls, and activate her on my turn so I can powerattack.

Hmm, yeah, I guess doing the whole favor/power attack thing is strong, but I usually find that 2 smaller attacks are more reliable (if less potentially spectacular) since your opponent can only respond once, meaning one will be left open.

Regarding Lupa's super attack, defending against her I've always kept 2 favor ready, so consider that way more of a denial/threat thing for her unless her side's already in a strong lead, in which case it can be a good finisher...

just pretend I said Urien ;)

basically you'll have to measure whether you want to mitigate an attack and forfeit the ability to activate that gladiator on your next turn, or toughing it out with defense and gaining the ability to activate and go forthe power attack / two attack turn (as you like)

Heh, fair enough.

Then again, I think it's a lot of why, in my teeny-tiny meta, Urbicus is considered pretty much top-tier for activation flexibility.
