So when pushing a mounted rider, since the base sizes are bigger, do you still ignore the first push if targeting the rider?

Hah, excellent question. I like the creative thinking going on here.

My guess is no, because you don't have to look at the physical models to figure out base sizes. The base size of each model is printed on their card. So if you are attacking Septimus, you are always attacking Septimus' card. And his card says he is on a 30mm base. That he is currently riding Nero, and so in reality occupies a 60mm base, doesn't change the fact that his card defines him as a 30mm based model.

Per the rulebook (PDF pg 13): ...When the rider becomes mounted, remove their model from the arena - the pair now share the space of the larger model’s base, and the rider is treated as having the same base size as the mount.

I think that would mean that, yes, the rider would gain the push resistance benefits that come with the larger base.

Damn, I forgot about that bit. Good find!

It seems pretty clear then. They both resist pushes equally as though both models were large based models. The mount confers its resistance onto the rider. Makes sense - he has something to hang onto, after all.

Yep, riders benefit from their mount's size and will usually end up with push resistance because of this.
