Evening all. I've been the lucky recipient of a couple of models for review purposes. Unfortunately, my own paint skills aren't what I would consider up to snuff when it comes to more realistically designed/proportioned sculpts. Thankfully, my pal Pat over at http://artisansedge.com/ was keen to test his skills. Who was I to say no?

Behold the fruits of his labors.

Both are very nicely painted and make me keen to test my own painting abilities with these high-quality sculpts. I do question the paleness of Noxius, though. On the one hand, he's a condemned gladiator/slave from Rome, while Aquila is from Britain - I'd expect the skin tones to be reversed, from a purely "one gets more sun than the other" stand point. Then again, Noxius is a condemned slave who probably sees a fair bit of time confined in a cell somewhere, so pale kinda works for him...

Out of curiosity, would it be possible to ask your painter why he chose those tones for the skin?

I gave him no direction re: skin tones, trusting in his artistic bent to do what he would. The blonde hair marks this Noxius as possibly Nordic in origin - certainly not out of the question given that the Noxii are many and varied, and in the Arena Rex setting (almost) anything goes in terms of where an arena slave might have originated from.

I've sent Pat a link to the thread and asked him to drop by.

I am the guy lucky enough to have a shot at painting these minis.

I basically used the artwork as reference for Noxius. I did consider giving him tanned flesh but blondes don't generally take to the sun to well. I've seen it first hand since my wife is a pale skinned blonde. During the summer she has a tendency to turn a reddish pink colour if she spends too much time outside. I didn't want to try and emulate that. I would have failed miserably.

Other than that it was a good opportunity to try out a pale flesh tone that isn't undead ;)

He's tried to post twice now, but keeps getting something about his post needing moderation.

What is the resin physical quality of the models?

Is it as delicate as say, Studio McVey's?

or is it stronger? Should I be worried about dice hitting them or dropping on the floor?

looks very nice!
Only thing i would change is the colour of the base. The sand is a bit too white for me.
