In regards to other companies and their conversion policies I figured I'd mention I've always heard it had a lot to do with legal issues that could arise.

Let's say AR had an official sanctioned tournament and the winner had done a conversion with a very blatant GW part on one of their miniatures. If they posted pictures on the website and GW saw their part on an AR mini on the AR website they'd slap a lawsuit down before you could say Smurf.

That's assuming, of course, they don't just send special operatives to burn down every flgs that carries AR. Last I heard they're a soulless money grubbing company, so it could really go either way.

I agree that this can be an issue. Privateer Press had to institute a policy like that a few years ago, saying that if you take your army to some sort of big profile tournament, the army isn't allowed to reference intellectual properties of other companies. So it isn't allowed to be a Warmachine army that looks like Marvel Superheroes, for example. Presumably for the reason you state, that then Marvel Inc. could start complaining and asking for pictures of the event to be taken down since it uses their IP without permission. Or something.
